FLOPS Minutes 20 January 2005
Posted on Tuesday, January 25 @ 09:38:38 CST by andy

Beer & Homebrewing dojopub writes "Our monthly meeting was held in the familiar confines of the Home brewery. Over sixteen members and guests attended and again even guests and new members brought beer and homebrew-

Old Business-
Alan Gann and Steve Field were to continue in the design for club T-shirts.

Ashley Goodwin agreed to talk with his friend about designing a logo for the club- Payment to be rendered in homebrew.

New Business-
Following our social night (Ashley and Amy Gann were the last standing) at The Hog Haus we again came to the conclusion that the beer served was under hopped, under carbonated, and thank god
uninfected. Much discussion about how to tactfully address our collective concerns with the micro-brews offered. The food was OK. Members had appetizers and entrees.

Maybe it could be requested that of the 6 microbrews offered, maybe one could be an american pale, IPA, etc...

Collection of the Dues was initiated with 9 paid members-
Jay Smith
John Collier
Paul Laue
Jay "Pukeboy" Craig
Mark Smith
Alan Gann
Tom Ford
Mike Lennox
David Gulliver
Ash Goodwin

As our elected treasurer is temporarily unavailable we elected a new one by acclimation- Ash Goodwin (now I've got your notes, and your cash!) After a brief acceptance speech, pledging to follow in
footsteps of other great treasurers such as Kenneth Lay, Judas Iscariot the meeting continued.

Our Next meeting will be held at West Mountain Brewery 17 February 2005. Ground rules were established for the "beer protocol" The owner has said that homebrew is OK. No Locally available beer- Exception may be maid for a bottle being presented for style. Meeting will occur at the regular time, everyone is encouraged to eat and drink, and TIP in support of the staff and the business.

Discussion was given to having club name tags- this is pending the acceptance of a logo.

A Copy of the "Matose Falcons" club magazine was presented to the club for their interest. Nice Magazine.

Social Night is planned for February 5th at Brewski's 4:00pm Tom offered to buy Ash's beer (Thought I'd forget didn't you)

A JP of Benton County AR, Bill Adams, is attempting to legalize alcohol sales in the second wettest county of the state (Pulaski is #1, makes sense if you look at Arkansas legislation). Mr. Adams also is a home brewer and has been invited to the meetings and expressed some interest in attending. He has established a website dedicated to the issues at www.timetodecide.org

Tom received an email that offered several items for sale by an old member they are as follows:

"And here's the detail on the stuff Jeremy has for sale. Include his e-mail and the list of stuff he is selling. He has no named price, but wants to sell it altogether. (Anyone can contact him and make an
offer.)

FOR SALE - Jeremy, jpratch@uark.edu
The basic home brew kit they sell at the store.
Auto siphon
glass carboy for secondary fermentation
carboy strap
2 stainless brew pots
2 cases of regular bottles
1 case of Grolsch bottles (with new rub! ber gaskets)
a half full bag of crowns
an almost full bottle of iodophor"

A membership list will be available on the website to FLOPS members only. And on that note we suckered Jay Smith into being the club Webmaster.

So Mike sponsored the position to be created (Paul 2nd)
Jay Elected by Acclamation (Mike, Paul 2nd)

Thank you Jay

Mark presented a bottle from Firestone Brewery of Belgian Oak Fermented Ale, that most found quite tasty.

Plain brown bottles only with No markings, Labels may be rubber banded to the bottles, the website is www.bluebonnetbrewoff.com

If you are sending your items in at the last minute please get hold of Jay.

There is also a beer label competition.

Mike presented the style of American Pale Ale
www.bjcp.org provided the following details:
Aroma:
Usually moderate to strong hop aroma from dry hopping or late kettle additions of American hop varieties. Citrusy hop aroma very common.
Esters vary from low to high. Diacetyl moderate to none.

Appearance:
Pale golden to amber.

Flavor:
Often moderate to high hop flavor. Citrusy hop flavor very common (such as from Cascades), but also other American hop variety flavors are found. Malt flavor moderate relative to aggressive hop flavor and
bitterness. Balance towards bitterness. Caramel flavor is usually restrained. Diacetyl moderate to none.

Mouthfeel:
Many are rather light, refreshing and more highly carbonated than many other styles, but body can reach medium. Carbonation borders on effervescent in some examples.

Overall Impression: Should be refreshing.

History:
An American adaptation of English pale ale.

Comments:
In the past, this category also covered what is now called American amber ale. American pale ales differ from American amber ales notably by being lighter in color, but also in having less caramel flavor and usually being balanced more towards hop bitterness.

Ingredients:
Pale ale malt, typically American two-row. Light to medium crystal malts. American hops, often the citrusy ones such as Cascade, Centennial and Columbus, but others may also be used (e.g., Brewer's Gold or Willamette). Water can vary in sulfate content, but carbonate content should be relatively low.

Vital Statistics:
OG: 1.045-1.056
IBUs: 20-40 FG: 1.010-1.015
SRM: 4-11 ABV: 4.5-5.7%

Commercial Examples:
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Summit Pale Ale, Great Lakes Burning River Pale Ale.

Commercial Examples will be sampled at our next meeting. The march meeting will feature a brewing of the style.

At the March meeting we will pair old brewers with new ones to brew to style and to learn from each other.

Mike has offered to make a Brew Sculpture for anyone with the space, Kegs, and funds. Mikes sculptures have the added quality of being
very useful gravity fed brewing systems. Please contact Mike for Details, options and (gasp) pricing.

Meeting closed.
Revelry insued."
